Marvel Studios’ third film this year, Ant-Man and The Wasp, couldn’t be any more thematically different than its 2018 predecessors, yet it seems it might ending up having one thing in common with both Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War: a bigger than predicted opening weekend.
The feel-good follow up to 2015’s Ant-Man seems to be outpacing predictions with early estimates indicating it took in more than $11M during its Thursday night opening. Those numbers more than double the original film’s opening and put the film in the company of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and, should the numbers climb higher, with 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. The film’s box office trajectory has changed for the better of the past several weeks with recent predictions targeting an $85M opening weekend, but if the estimates are accurate and the film’s positive reviews draw more families into the theater this, the film could push for a $100M open.
