DuVernay is best known for directing Selma, which earned her the first nomination of a black woman for an Academy Award for Best Picture.
She also directed Disney’s 2018 film adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s sci-fi fantasy novel A Wrinkle in Time, which starred Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon.
Screenwriter Kairo Salem joins Ava in the project, which will be released separate from the DCEU in which Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the rest preside. Warner Bros. plans to create a new cinematic banner for The New Gods, as well as other future projects.
A release date has not been announced yet.
