Benedict Cumberbatch is eager to get back into the Cloak of Levitation for the untitled Avengers 4 movie scheduled for May 3, 2018. This past weekend Avengers: Infinity War passed a record breaking 2 billion dollar mark. With that much movie earned, we have to wonder if all the characters taken away by the infinity gauntlet will remain dead? In Cumberbatch’s case, it doesn’t appear so.
When speaking to Deadline, Cumberbatch was asked if he’ll be return to the role of Doctor Strange for Avengers 4, Cumberbatch states:
“Oh, Strange? Just try to stop me. That’s all kind of lined up as far as I’m aware, but who knows? I mean, you know, the problem is, how does he get out of where he’s at. But that’s the only thing. I’m bits of dust at the moment as far as I understand. So you really have to ask [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige. But as far as wanting to do it, yeah, I would love to go back into that role.”
If you’d read Marvel’s Infinity War, you know that the characters come back to the Marvel Universe in a very surprising way! Of all people, Nebula is the hero of the story. Nebula ends up with the Infinity Gauntlet and reverses all the consequences of Thanos’ control from the gauntlet. Which means at some point, Doctor Strange and the rest of the ashes from Infinity War could return. As to how big Spider-man, Doctor Strange, Loki, Black Panther, Winter Soldier, Groot, Gamora, Mantis, Peter Quill, Drax, Heimdall and Doctor Strange’s role will be after Avengers 4 is the real question.
Even with all these stories pointing to Strange’s return. We should also look at the earns of this character for the MCU. According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, Doctor Strange grossed $667,718,395 worldwide, which is enough money to green light a sequel. Although a Doctor Strange movie has yet to be announced, the plans for the future of the MCU are definitely continuing past Phase 4.
Who knows though. Maybe Phase 4 is the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers 4 might be a great ending for what seems like a legacy.
