Timothy Zahn’s next book has finally received a synopsis and its a doozy! In Thrawn: Alliances, everyone’s favorite blue skinned stoic is back. Before we even crack the binding to read the synopsis we have to not only drool over the cover, but ponder the hundreds of implications that come with it.
First off this cover is not the wide release cover. The wide release cover will be Darth Vader with Thrawn in the same pose (featured picture). This cover will be a San Diego Comicon exclusive. Besides that is the obvious WHAT THE FRAK! That’s Anakin with Thrawn. How is that even possible? I saw this cover and immediately hit the net to figure out what I was missing. Did I miss a Clone Wars episode or something? When did they meet? The answer is they haven’t…..yet.
In the first Thrawn book, in Thrawn’s sales pitch to the Emperor he mentions Anakin Skywalker and that he would like to meet him again. The Emperor tells Thrawn Anakin is dead. We have no idea how the two met or what happened. We will finally get that story in these pages.
Now for the inside jacket cover: “Grand Admiral Thrawn and Darth Vader team up against a threat to the Empire in this thrilling novel from bestselling author Timothy Zahn. “I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.” Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root—its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fierce rivals for the emperor’s favor, and outspoken adversaries on Imperial affairs—including the Death Star project—the formidable pair seem unlikely partners for such a crucial mission. But the Emperor knows it’s not the first time Vader and Thrawn have joined forces. And there’s more behind his royal command than either man suspects. In what seems like a lifetime ago, General Anakin Skywalker of the Galactic Republic, and Commander Mitth’raw’nuruodo, officer of the Chiss Ascendancy, crossed paths for the first time. One on a desperate personal quest, the other with motives unknown. . . and undisclosed. But facing a gauntlet of dangers on a far-flung world, they forged an uneasy alliance—neither remotely aware of what their futures held in store. Now, thrust together once more, they find themselves bound again for the planet where they once fought side by side. There they will be doubly challenged—by a test of their allegiance to the Empire . . . and an enemy that threatens even their combined might.”
Just WOW! Not only are we getting our favorite stoic strategy master, not only are we getting our favorite ass kicking Sith lord, but they are heading into the unknown regions once more. If there is an overlying arc to everything going on, there is something major going on with the unknown regions. Could this be Snoke related? Is it something else even worse?
All that is just the present. It sounds like we are getting back story of what actually happened with Anakin and Thrawn back during the Clone Wars. Thrawn seemed impressed by Skywalker, but is rivals with Lord Vader. Given Thrawn’s problem solving skills will he figure out they are one in the same? How will Lord Vader reconcile his memories of Thrawn as Anakin with those of Lord Vader?
If you are going to Comicon, You can get the next Timothy Zahn masterpiece and the special cover then. The rest of us will have to wait until July 24. Tim McCarver Jersey
