Warning: The following article contains mild spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.
Avengers: Infinity War left the Marvel Cinematic Universe on a startling cliffhanger but director James Gunn confirms that there will indeed be a future for the galaxy and its Guardians.
Infinity War left us with a lot of questions, particularly about the upcoming MCU films. Namely, where will the new Marvel films fit within the MCU timeline?
The Marvel films and television shows are not released in continuity order. For example, both July 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp and February 2019’s Captain Marvel will be set before the events of Infinity War even though they will premiere in theaters after Infinity War.
So, the next logical question is, are any of the other MCU films going to be set before Infinity War? A fan took to Twitter to ask Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn that very question and Mr. Gunn had a very straightforward reply.
It will be after.

It’s refreshing to see an MCU director not hide behind the “Marvel-will-kill-me-if-I-say-anything” defense and actually comment on the universe’s future beyond Infinity War. However, it still remains to be seen which characters will actually be in the third Guardians film since by the end of Infinity War the only Guardian left unaffected by Thanos’ “snap heard round the universe” was Rocket Raccoon.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 will start production in Atlanta, Georgia in January 2019. Gunn commented in a tweet from earlier this year that the third installment of the franchise will be coming to theaters in the year 2020.
