Disney Eyeing Actors Of Color For Leads In The Live Action The Little Mermaid Adaptation!

Walt Disney Studios is really hoping you don’t have live-action adaptation fatigue yet, because they’re keeping them coming! Off the heels of the release of the Dumbo trailer, we’ve got news from about another upcoming, live-action re-telling of a Disney classic, The Little Mermaid, and has begun the casting process. That’s not the story in itself – the story is – Disney is said to be looking at a potential new route for the film and may be looking to cast people of color for three important roles!

This isn’t the first time a The Little Mermaid adaptation chose colorblind casting. Paving the way with the 2008 Broadway adaptation, King Triton was portrayed by the magnificent, Tony Away Nominee, Norm Lewis, and Sabastian was brought to life by Tituss Burgess (Kimmy Schmidt). According to Disney Film Facts, Disney is continuing to kick open that door, and are looking to cast POC as leads Triton, Eric, and even Ariel! DFF reports that Disney may have had their eye on Keke Palmer (Scream Queens) and Zendaya (The Greatest Showman) as the singing mermaid – however, nothing is set in stone and it’s unknown if the studio has spoken to either actress.

The film doesn’t have a release date yet, but is expected to be filmed in Puerto Rico and Cape Town. It will be helmed by Rob Marshall (Pirates of The Caribbean), written by Jane Goldman (Stardust), and feature music composed by Alan Menken (every Disney movies of the 90s) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana).

Who would you want to see flip their fins as Ariel? I am all on board for Zendaya – she’s got all of Ariel’s wit, spunk, and beauty. For her Prince Eric? Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther). However, I don’t have any good reasons besides how handsome is he. I’d watch him play anything. Seriously. Anything. King Triton? I know it’s cliche – but Samuel L. Jackson. Can you imagine him going off on one of Triton’s angry benders?!

We’ve got a while to go until this one hits screens, merfolks, but I think we’re going to be in for a treat.
