BOOM! Studios unveiled a new five issue limited series, Low Road West, in a press release Thursday.
Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, and illustrated by artist Flaviano, Low Road West is set in a post-apocalyptic United States, where five teenagers make a grueling journey from the East Coast to safety in San Francisco, CA.
Forced to take shelter in an abandoned town after being stranded in Oklahoma, the teens face threats and challenges that make them question their entire outlook on life, and death, as they struggle to survive in a desolate and irradiated wasteland.
First impressions of the illustrations show promise, as finely detailed art bring a diverse cast to life against a backdrop of ruin. It’s easy to feel drawn into the war-torn environment, to almost feel the heat in the air and the stench of decay mixed with dust and ash, as you accompany this group on their harrowing mission to stay alive in a world where life is slipping like sand across the barren desert of their former home.
Low Road West will be available in print and digital this September.
The press release from BOOM! Studios:
BOOM! Studios is proud to announce LOW ROAD WEST #1, beginning a new five issue limited series from Eisner Award-nominated writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson (The Power of The Dark Crystal, Aquaman) and artist Flaviano (I Am Groot, Spider-Man/Deadpool) about five teenage refugees trying to survive the exodus from the war-torn East Coast to the sanctuary of San Francisco.
When the young refugees are stranded in an irradiated Oklahoma wasteland, they take shelter in a ghost town that is much more than it seems. The strange, unnatural threats they face there will make them question what they think they know about death, about reality, and especially about family as they learn to rely on each other to survive.
“Thematically, LOW ROAD WEST grew out of my earlier BOOM! Studios series,Last Sons of America and Warlords of Appalachia,” said Phillip Kennedy Johnson. “Fans of those stories will see familiar elements in LOW ROAD WEST, but the cast is bigger, the stakes are higher, and when the story veers into sci-fi and the supernatural, it veers hard. Half of the story takes place in an American ghost town which is itself a mystery the characters have to solve, and as for the other half… you’ll have to read it to find out, but Flaviano and I are incredibly stoked for readers to see where LOW ROAD WEST leads.”
“The world of LOW ROAD WEST is dynamic and stimulating, as nothing is what it seems and you never know what’s about to happen next,” said Flaviano. “Each script from Phillip is so exciting, giving me a chance to go deeper into each characters and see how they clash with each other, along with the world around them.”
LOW ROAD WEST #1, featuring a main cover by Flaviano and variant cover by David Lafuente (Ultimate Comics Spider-Man), is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to a world-class group of licensed comic book series and ambitious original series, including Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Planet of the Apes, Abbott, Victor LaValle’s Destroyer, Mech Cadet Yu, Grass Kings, and Klaus.
“Surviving your teenage years is hard enough without a post-apocalyptic crisis to make things really difficult,” said Eric Harburn, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “InLOW ROAD WEST, Phillip, Flaviano, Miquel, and Jim deftly capture the whirlwind experience of becoming yourself amidst a chaotic world that feels frighteningly close to the one we live in today.”
Print copies of LOW ROAD WEST will be available for sale in September 2018 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.
