Wonder Woman 2 – What Does WW84 Mean?!

President and CCO of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns recently uploaded an image to his Twitter and Facebook accounts.  A bold “WW84” on a black screen.  So is this a teaser for 2019’s Wonder Woman 2 or something completely different?  World War 84?

The Image

The image was posted this past Friday with no fanfare or explanation.  At CinemaCon, Wonder Woman 2 director Patty Jenkins stated the sequel will take place in the 1980’s.  Therefore the posted image could be confirmation of the time-frame and be teasing the film’s tone.  1984, the year Stranger Things Season 2 is set in.

The WW84 are in a bold font and distorted by static like a 1980’s television or computer screen.  The first film showed the beauty of Wonder Woman’s home Themyscira and juxtaposed that with World War I’s bleakness.  Will Wonder Wonder 2 invoke the nostalgia of the 1980’s like Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok?

In 1984

1984 was the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.  Will Wonder Woman prevent a nuclear war between the two super powers?  Also, during 1984 NASA was still launching space shuttles into orbit, including the maiden voyage of the Discovery.  So could we see Diana go into space and stop an alien invasion?  Maybe fend-off an early scouting mission from Apokolips and Darkseid?

That 1984

George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four is the classic story of a dystopian future.  The novel published in 1949 but the story takes place in a fictional 1984.  The world is in a constant state of war.  And the government is able to enact authoritarian policies in the name of safety.  Thus, Wonder Woman 2 could be a story of government surveillance and the manipulation of facts.

Nostalgia

1984 released Ghostbusters, Gremlins, and the Karate Kid into theaters.  Miami Vice and the Cosby Show broadcast on television and entered people’s homes.  Wonder Woman 2 might successfully capitalize on 80’s nostalgia unlike Warner Bros earlier attempt, Ready Player One.  Therefore, will we see Diana working out in spandex and leg-warmers or rockin’ a white pant suit? Gremlins jumping onto the screen might also happen since they are another Warner Bros franchise.

Wonder Woman 2 is directed by Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot as Diana / Wonder Woman.  Kristen Wiig plays the villain the Cheetah and Game of Thrones’ Pedro Pascal also has an unspecified role.  Wonder Woman 2 will hit theaters November 1, 2019.
