When Power Rangers the movie was released last year, there was plenty of hope that it would be a major blockbuster and thus a number of sequels to come. Things didn’t quite happen that way. Power Rangers flopped in the US bringing in a dismal $85.3 Million and with foreign gross it brought in a paltry $142,337,240. After that Saban never mentioned anything about a sequel. Fast forward almost a year later and Saban sells the Power Rangers brand to Hasbro, and Hasbro decides maybe they should give the true Ranger fans what they want.
At the Hasbro Strategic Decisions Conference today, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner laid out his vision for the Power Ranger franchise:
“As I mentioned, we’ve now announced the acquisition of Power Rangers,” Goldner said. “This is really a great statement about where we believe we are in developing our brand blueprint. The fact that we can acquire Power Rangers brand and plug and play that right into our strategy where we activate it in entertainment, motion pictures in the future and then of course across toys and games and consumer products and do so globally. We felt the brand was very under leveraged and undervalued. We feel we can exploit it to a much greater extent and it was a great opportunity to acquire the brand.”
Hen then added more on Hasbro now owning the Power Ranger brand:
“Power Rangers is an iconic brand built on a heritage of great storytelling and merchandising with tremendous upside potential when fully executed across Hasbro’s Brand Blueprint,” Goldner said. “Shortly after entering into our licensing arrangement, it became clear that now was the time to begin investing in unlocking Power Rangers’ full potential. We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire Brand Blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint. We couldn’t be more pleased that Haim Saban will continue in a consulting role to further guide our development of this valuable property for the next generation of Power Rangers fans.”
I’m actually excited for more Ranger films. The first one left us with a little cliffhanger and revealed the green ranger was indeed coming and now we may actually see this happen. Craig Robertson Authentic Jersey
