Exclusive: Kumail Nanjiani Has Offer To Join Men In Black Reboot

Kumail Nanjiani is one of the funniest people on the planet but he may be out of this world in Sony’s Men In Black reboot.

The next installment for the Men in Black franchise begins shooting in just a few weeks and we already know who will be wearing the iconic black sunglasses and suits. But casting hasn’t stopped there! That Hashtag Show has learned that Kumail Nanjiani has been offered a starring role alongside Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in the upcoming sequel.

According to our source, Kumail Nanjiani has been offered the role of PAWNY:

The third side kick. A funny, wise-cracking, sex-driven alien from a civilization that exists on a Chessboard.

After earning his first Academy Award nomination for co-writing The Big Sick, a film loosely based on his life, Kumail Nanjiani has been one of the hottest names in Hollywood.

His comedic timing and unique voice would make him a perfect addition for this Men in Black universe, especially as an alien. The offer is on the table and his film schedule seems pretty open after he’s done filming Stuber and The True American.

Sony’s reboot will feature all new characters rather than Agents K and J, portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, and will build on the contemporary sci-fi world in which they operated.

The film will feature Hemsworth playing Agent H, a suave but slightly goofy James Bond-esk British MIB agent. It will also co-star Tessa Thompson playing Molly, a young woman who knows that alien exists and is determined to become an MIB agent.

Last week it was reported that Liam Neeson was in talks to join the cast as the leader of the British branch of the MIB. He’ll likely oversee the characters being played by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. In theory, he’ll be replacing Rip Torn’s Zed, who served as the MIB boss in the original films.

F. Gary Gray, who most recently directed The Fate of the Furious, is locked in to direct the intergalactic adventure. The script, penned by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, is set within the same universe as the previous films, but puts a contemporary spin on the franchise that captures things on a more global scale. Steven Spielberg is executive producing the film set to come out in the Summer of 2019.

The “Men in Black” sequel/reboot has gone through a couple different iterations before arriving at this version. Before F. Gary Gray came on board, there were rumors that producers were considering a ‘MIB’/”21 Jump Street” crossover featuring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller overseeing the project. Now, it seems like the studio is interested in a more traditional reboot of the franchise.

The original films followed Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, who played agents of a secret organization known as the ‘Men in Black’ that protected Earth from intergalactic bad guys.

Smith and Jones powered the first Men in Black film to $589 million at the global box office in 1997 and subsequently starred in two sequels — one in 2002 and one a decade later in 2012.

The entire franchise has made more than $1.5 billion worldwide so it was only inevitable we’d see this hilariously crazy universe again.
