A intriguing new rumor has emerged this morning suggesting that Academy Award winning actor, Jake Gyllenhaal, has joined the MCU as Mysterio! Gyllenhaal reportedly took the role after Ryan Gosling passed it up due to scheduling conflicts. The rumor comes from The Sun, so until we hear from more reliable sources (and we have reached out to ours) we aren’t quite jumping for joy, but the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is casting and Gyllenhaal does fit the profile that we reported for the film’s villian.
Should the report prove true, it’s a win on two levels. Adding an actor of Gyllenhaal’s caliber as an MCU villain should only serve to extend Marvel Studios current streak of strong antagonists in their films (addressing a common complaint leveled against them in their early phases). Additionally, Mysterio is one of Spidey’s oldest villains and one that fans have been longing to see on the big screen for some time. Gyllenhaal has proven himself a fantastic character actor and seems to be a perfect fit for the character IF this all works out.
Quentin Beck, the man that became Mysterio, was first introduced way back in 1964’s Amazing Spider-Man #13. Originally a Hollywood special effects genius who failed in his attempts to become an actor, the disillusioned Beck turned to crime, using his expertise in special effects to create elaborate illusions to assist in his crimes. Mysterio and Spidey first crossed paths when the villain set up Spidey to appear as the culprit in a museum robbery. The two fought many times over the years and Mysterio also served as an antagonist to Daredevil while working for Kingpin.
If the report proves true (The Sun is also running “Chrissy Teigen Ripped Her ‘Butthole’ While Giving Birth to Daughter Luna” as a headline) and Gyllenhaal is portraying Mysterio, it will bring a second member of the Sinister Six to the big screen. We know that Sony once had plans for a Sinister Six film and that it’s a team that comic fans would love see finally hit the screen, especially if it came to be under the creative control of Kevin Feige and company. Stay tuned as we will continue to update this story as we learn more.
