Saban’s Power Rangers has been acquired by toymaker Hasbro. Hasbro now controls the future all things Power Rangers, including toys, tv shows, and comic books. BOOM! Studios began their amazing run of new Mighty Morphin Power Ranger comics in 2016. However, all of Hasbro’s franchises have their stories told by IDW Publishing. Is time running out for the Power Rangers comics fans love?
A History of Comic Books
To see the future of Power Rangers comics, you must look at the past of another franchise. In the 1980’s, Marvel published Star Wars comics. However, Marvel did not own Star Wars, Lucasfilm did. Lucasfilm gave the comic book license to Dark Horse in 1991 and they made new stories for over two decades. Dark Horse also re-published compilations of Marvel’s old stories.
Disney purchased Marvel Entertainment in 2009 and Lucasfilm in 2012. Star Wars comics moved again, when Dark Horse’s license ended in 2014. Marvel began publishing new Star Wars comics in 2015. Consequently, they could now re-publish their old 1980’s comics and Dark Horse’s entire Star Wars library. Comic books are held by the franchise owner, not the license holder.
The Future of Power Rangers Comics
Hasbro’s purchase of the Power Rangers brand could be the end of the BOOM! Studios series. However, there is hope. IDW started new continuities for Hasbro franchises Transformers and G.I. Joe. But they also revived the 1980’s Marvel Transformers and G.I. Joe series. They even brought back G.I. Joe legend Larry Hama to continue writing one.
When the Power Rangers license ends at BOOM! Studios, it is likely to be picked up by IDW Publishing. But when will that happen? It might not be a coincidence that IDW and Hasbro recently announced the beginning of a new Hasbro expanded universe. Next year, the Power Rangers might be fighting beside the Transformers, G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K., Rom, the Visionaries, and the Micronauts. They could also be rocking with Jem and the Holograms or visit the residents of My Little Pony’s Equestria. My Little Pony: Equestria Girls could even get a power up from the Morphin Grid!
The Wrap Up
Hopefully IDW will continue their history of bringing back classic talent. With the success of Shattered Grid, Kyle Higgins has shown his understanding of both Power Rangers and its fans. There’s even a chance that old Power Rangers series, previously down-played by Saban, might also make a comeback.
There will definitely be a new series of Hasbro Power Rangers. New shows, new toys, and new comics. But it might not be the end of BOOM!’s teenagers with attitude that we’ve come to love.
