Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham‘s Fast and the Furious spin-off, Hobbs and Shaw, is now confirmed to kick off production this September under the direction of David Leitch. The film is set to follow the odd couple of Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Statham’s Deckard Shaw as they are once again forced to team up to tackle a brand new villain. We’ve gotten hold of a batch of character breakdowns for the film which reveal the new villain along with some interesting new additions to the cast.
Rumors have swirled that Charlize Theron might reprise her role as Cipher for the film and while that still may happen, it seems that it will be a new baddie named “Mr. Null” that brings the two brawlers together again. The studio is looking for an actor, 49-59, to fill the role of Null who is described as a “British villain” and “mysterious international terrorist who dresses in all black.” We know that these films are full of surprises and tend to be full of twists and turns, so there’s plenty of room for Theron’s return as well, but it seems that, at least as of early April, it will be Mr. Null, a name which certainly forces one to think about Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody, that kicks things off.
David Leitch said in taking over the spin-off that he wanted to “evolve” the world of the leads “outside of the ‘Fast’ world” and it appears as thought he’s settled on just how he wants to do that: it’s all about family. We’ve seen quite a bit of the Shaw family, meeting both his brother, Owen, and his mother, Magdalene, but it seems that there’s one more sibling in the mix for us to meet: Hattie Shaw. The studio is looking for an actress, 28-39, in the mold of Kate Winslet to play Deckard’s sister, Hattie, who is “an MI-6 agent.” There’s no mention of whether or not Luke Evans and Hellen Mirren would reprise their roles as Owen and Magdalene, but as these films continue to build these worlds, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them pop up.
With the Shaws so firmly established, Hobbs has some work to do to catch up and it seems that Leitch and writer Chris Morgan intend to do that as we will be meeting the entire Hobbs clan in Hobbs and Shaw. The studio is on the search for a Polynesian actress, 70-75, to play Sofia Hobbs, described as the “matriarch” of the Hobbs family and five Polynesian men, all 30-50, to portray Hobbs’s brothers: Jonah, Cal, Tim, Matt and Alex. Older brother Jonah wil have a bit of a larger role to play as he holds a bit of a grudge against Luke for some reason and the other brothers roles will just be large cameos.
It’ll be interesting to see what Leitch and Morgan have contrived to bring all these characters together when the film hits theaters August 2, 2019 and how it fares against the likes of New Mutants and the yet unannounced WB film set for that date.
