Disneyland and Disney World have seen their share of Pride with both parks being home to unofficial, fan created Gay Days, since 1991. As time has gone on, Disney Parks has embraced the unofficial days in the same way it’s shown support for Dapper Days, and Bats’ Day. However, Disney has never released a full on Pride collection…until now!
ShopDisney has released a full line of Pride items – and there’s no way to say they’re just coincidental rainbows; 10% of proceeds from “the Rainbow Mickey Collection” will be donated to GLSEN (pronounced glisten) through June 30, with a maximum donation $50,000. GLSEN was founded in 1990 by a dedicated group of teachers in Massachusetts who came together to improve an education system that too frequently allows lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) students to be bullied, discriminated against, or fall through the cracks.
Following the in-park of Rainbow Mickey and Minnie ears, the Disney website now hosts an assortment of rainbow hued items including snapbacks, fanny packs, shirts, sunglasses, tank tops, tees, water bottles, and tradable enamel pins.
This show of support for the QUILTBAG community is a huge step forward for the Walt Disney company as whole. Hopefully, we will see this support translate onto their on-screen characterizations, which have been lacking, and continue to show that love, is love, is love.
