While there hasn’t been too much development lately on Matt Reeves’ The Batman, it appears that we may have ourselves a big bad for the upcoming project. Variety’s Justin Kroll shared on his social media page that he is hearing that a certain Caped Crusader foe is possibly going to be the main antagonist in the solo film.
According to Kroll, Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. the Penguin, one of the Caped Crusader’s most iconic villains, is supposedly being eyed for that position. Kroll does stress that people should take this with a “grain of salt” due to how the DC Extended Universe flip-flops a lot with their decisions. However, there is another DCEU movie that Penguin could potentially appear in as the big bad, should Reeves not want to feature him in The Batman.
“Take this with a grain of salt as things are constantly changing in the DCEU but I’m hearing the Penguin is possibly the choice to play the main villain in THE BATMAN. Sources add even if Reeves decide to go another route the studio could then make him the main villain in BOP. Reeves is still working on the script, so that could always change but of the multiple BIRDS OF PREY scripts submitted, one does have the Penguin as the main heavy. Either way, it seems WB wants this character cast in the universe sooner rather then later.”
That’s right, Birds of Prey, the upcoming female team film, starring Black Canary, Huntress, and Batgirl, could maybe have Cobblepot facing the iconic heroines. It has almost been two months since it was revealed that Cathy Yan was set to helm the DC picture featuring Margot Robbie reprising the role as Harley Quinn. Neither projects have any set release dates as of right now and with scripts still being worked on for at least one of the projects, it might be a while till we know where we’ll see Penguin first.
Penguin has been active in the world of live-action for almost five years now on FOX’s Gotham where Robin Lord Taylor portrays the beloved villain. The series has been renewed for a fifth and final season that will consist of 13 episodes, so Lord Taylor’s run with the character will, sadly, be coming to an end in the next TV season.
