Ron Howard On Getting To Direct A STARS WARS Movie

Ron Howard has had quite the career in the entertainment industry. Starting off as an actor in television and film before making the transition to directing, and becoming one of the best working directors out there. Howard has directed just about every genre of film out there from comedy Splash, Biopics A Beautiful Mind  (Which won Howard an Academy Award for directing), Fantasy Willow which was from Lucasfilm, as well as other classics we know today, Apollo 13 Backdraft, among many other.  However despite his long directing career he had never directed a Star Wars film until he replaced original Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller due to creative differences.

During the press conference for Solo: A Star Wars Story Howard talked about what it was like to finally get the chance to direct a film in the Star Wars universe.

“Well, it’s its own, it’s the galaxy far, far away and, ah, you know, and you… the level of anticipation is really unlike anything I’ve done.  Even some pretty big titles with a lot of, a lot of an interest.  And you… you know, you fall into it and it’s amazing.  It was a little bit… I began to recognize, you know, as something similar to the Beatles documentary that I took on, because I, you know, I’m at a point in my life where I like experimenting, I like to take some chances.  I’m not too, you know, not too, not too worried about the outcome.  I wanted to have the creative experience and… and I sort of felt that way about jumping into a Star Wars  movie.  But I also felt that way about jumping into the Beatles documentary and then I could tell from the moment it was announced, Ron, don’t f*** this up.  That was [OVERLAPPING] [LAUGHTER] — So I immediately, you know, felt the same thing as related to this. Of course, of course, that, you know, the fans care.  And they should care.”

Howard would go on to re-shoot over 75% of the film after taking over for Lord and Miller. After watching this film you can really see and feel Howard’s directorial touch, which really benefited the film quite nicely. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Ron Howard back in the directors chair for another film in a galaxy far, far away.
