[UPDATE] EXCLUSIVE: Carlton Cuse’s ‘LOCKE AND KEY’ In Talks To Be Picked Up By Netflix *UPDATED*

After being passed over by Hulu, Carlton Cuse’s Locke and Key has been picked up by Netflix. In March, Hulu CEO Randy Freer reportedly passed on ordering the show to series after viewing its pilot. The network had been developing the adaptation of the IDW comic for some time but despite support from Hulu execs Joel Stillerman and Craig Erwich, Freer made the call to move on. Cuse said they would shop the series to other streaming services and it seems that Netflix must have liked what they saw from the pilot and the 7 previously scripted issues as they are now in discussions with IDW to acquire the show.

Based on writer Joe Hill’s graphic novel series which ran from 2008-13, “Locke and Key revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them an array of powers. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys and will stop at nothing to attain them.” The project has lingered in development hell for some time, having originally been scheduled to air on Fox during the 2010-11 season, then being developed as a film before finally landing at Hulu in April of last year.

A representative from Netflix reached out to us to let us know that the deal is not yet final, however, when asked for an update about the status of discussions, David Ozer, President of IDW Entertainment, said

“Being such an important franchise for IDW Entertainment, we hope to have an announcement regarding the Locke & Key series in the near future.”
