Hopefully you haven’t had your fill of Disney Live-Action film adaptations, because they’ve just announced another! Disney and Netflix are partnering to turn The Hunchback of Notre Dame into an instant live-action classic. That’s not even the best part of the story – – – Idris Elba will be directing, starring, and producing the music for the film. Go ahead, catch your breath. I’ll wait.

Now that you’re back with me; yes, Idris Elba is going to be helming the film with a script by Michael Mitnick (The Giver). We can’t forget, Elba and Netflix have amazing history together – Beasts of No Nation earned him a Golden Globe nomination, along with critical acclaim. This Hunchback adaptation won’t be his first time directing either. Earlier this year Yardie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and while most of us are familiar with Elba for his work in film, he is also a rapper and a DJ (having appeared on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s This Unruly Mess I’ve Made.) Just an FYI, the score for the Disney film was nominated for a Golden Globe and Academy Award, so no pressure there, Idris.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame joins Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Aladdin and The Lion King as direct adaptations – with a second Malificent film and a film based on Cruella De Vil in the Disney live-action pipeline.

The Victor Hugo classic novel was a dark choice for a Disney adaptation, but in the years since it’s release, Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and Frollo have become beloved Disney characters. The Netflix film is being described as a “sonic and musical experience” and will feature an original score.

While I’m skeptical about the “need” for more live-action adaptations, I am VERY excited for this…really any excuse to see Idris Elba on screen. While I’m very intrigued to hear the new soundtrack, as the original soundtrack was full of GREAT songs (except for the Gargoyle one…seriously, it’s terrible) I’m more interested to see what Elba will do in front of the camera. At this point, all reports say that he will be “starring”, but no one has said in what role. While it’s assumed he’ll take on Quasimodo – Frollo could also be considered a starring role and can you imagine that man singing about hell fire? I am here for it.
