How L3 The Droid Stole The Show In SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

It’s become a normal thing in the STAR WARS universe for a Droid to steal all the scenes they’re in. BB-8 stole the Force Awakens, K-2SO played by the amazing Alan Tudyk hands down stole Rogue One and now with SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY we have our first scene stealing female droid L3-37. As soon as we are introduced to L3 you get the idea that she’s unlike any droid we’ve seen before. She’s sassy, loud and independent and did I mention loud? From yelling at the battle droids to rise up to the way she sits behind the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon you can tell she’s one of a kind. The scene that did it for me was when L3, Lando, Han and Kira were walking to the Falcon after Lando beat Han in a game of Sabacc and the way L3 moved reminded me of a strong independent sassy women that really doesn’t care what you think about her and there’s a reason why.

During the SOLO press conference the actress that actually played L3, Phoebe Waller-Bridge revealed that L3 is made of several different Droid parts. She went on to say:

She’s… she’s a self-made droid, so she created herself out of parts of other droids.  It’s… sounds kind of frightening, actually, when I put it like that. [LAUGHS] It’s like, where did you get those bits?  Um, but she creates herself out of astormech droids and protocal droids so she turns herself into a unique creature that’s kind of taller, stronger… more independent than she originally was.  So… yeah, she’s got a great attitude and she has [LAUGHS] — she’s very upbeat. And [LAUGHTER] speaks… really fun to be around. She’s a… yeah, she’s fearless, she’s uncensored, she’s very funny and… and she has… and she’s a revolutionary and she has an agenda, which… is bigger than the sum of her parts, which is something that’s really extraordinary… for… her character and it’s great to play that, great to play a droid, you know, with a message. [LAUGHTER] Yeah, she’s great.

This is a game changer for me. This is the first time that a droid has actually built itself of different parts in order to make herself a unique individual droid. You get a taste of how unique and needed she is when Lando makes it point to mention that he could have rebooted her a while ago but hasn’t because of her navigation interface. You see how important L3 is to Lando when he would risk his life to save her on the mines of Kessel. What’s even more amazing about Waller-Bridges performance is that she was actually on set wearing a L3 suit with the actors all thru filming. Check out the picture below so you can see her in all her Green suit/droid glory.
