[POSSIBLE SPOILERS] Solo: A Star Wars Story – Han Solo’s True Adversary Revealed?

The newest trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story has dropped more clues to the films ultimate villain. Earlier in the year, a source working on the movie leaked the return of a major Star Wars character.  The new Solo trailer focused on the gangster character, Dryden Vos, played by Paul Bettany. Specifically, the fact that Vos answers to someone else.

The Usual Suspect

When Bettany’s character of Dryden Vos was announced, it was assumed he would be the “big shot gangster putting together a crew.”  And while he seems to be the organizer, the absolute boss for this heist appears to be Jabba the Hutt.

The Price

In the trailer, Woody Harrelson’s Tobais Beckett tells Han, “You know what it’s like to live with a price on your head?”  Immediately followed by Dryden Vos saying, “You’ll spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder.”  At the beginning of Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo tells the General Rieekan he has to leave with a similar phrase.  “Well, there’s a price on my head.  If I don’t pay off Jabba the Hutt, I’m a dead man.”

That Hat

An earlier trailer for Solo gave another clue to Jabba’s appearance.  A couple quick shots of a familiar helmet.  The helmet and accompanying armor strongly resemble a guard from Jabba’s Palace.  Lando Calrissian wore the costume when going undercover to free Han in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.

That Hutt

Jabba the Hutt was first mentioned in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and again in The Empire Strikes Back.  Audiences got their first look at the bloated crime lord in Return of the Jedi.  Jabba’s menace grew when he successfully captured Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, and Luke Skywalker.  The fact that Princess Leia killed him with the very chain that bound her only added to his importance.

The Wrap Up

Famous characters returning in the new Star Wars films has become a common occurrence.  The original cast came back in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens to hand off the saga to the next generation.  Rogue One: A Star Wars Story digitally restored Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin and a teenage Princess Leia.  Frank Oz brought back Yoda for Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. And Jabba himself dropped into both Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace and the Special Edition of A New Hope.  At this point, fans are expecting a major cameo from the prequels.  Jabba not appearing in new Solo film would be ludicrous.
