Avengers: Age of Ultron opened with the Avengers, in all their glory, taking out a Hydra base run by Baron von Strucker. Avengers: Civil War saw part of Cap’s new team taking down Crossbones in Lagos. The events of these in media res style opening scenes not only started the films off with a bang, but they also showed us that our heroes have stayed busy between films, making the world a little more believable because there is some Avenging happening when we aren’t watching too. To that end, my old MCU Exchange colleague, Charles Villanueva, and I have been talking about what an appropriate opening would be for next year’s Avengers 4 and we decided that if the film does take place a period of years after the conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War (and we totally believe that it should and does), it would only make sense that despite all the death and darkness, the Avengers picked up the pieces and got back to Avenging…and then yesterday a rumor emerged that really fit nicely into our theory.
MCU Cosmic, a site which emerged with a huge rumor that Marvel Studios was developing a film around The Eternals (a rumor that Kevin Feige confirmed a couple of weeks ago), reported on a rumor that, if true, could possibly work as an opening scene, in the mold of those described above, for Avengers 4. Early set photos for Avengers 4 showed parts of Atlanta transformed into downtown Tokyo.
According to the rumor, these Tokyo scenes will see Clint Barton, having taken up the mantle of Ronin, hunting down some Yakuza who turn out to be Skrulls. Thanos’s snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War may have given the Skrulls the push they needed to finally invade Earth, a plan we’ll likely see them formulating when Captain Marvel hits screens ahead of Avengers 4. In fact, the rumor also adds that when we see Nick Fury and Maria Hill at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, they make the call to Carol Danvers because they believe the alien signatures they are picking up are from the invading Skrulls. So it seems that while Avengers 4 is going to end one story, the writers have found a way to cleverly bridge the beginning of the Skrull Secret Invasion, a story that many people believe will feature in Marvel Studios new slate of films. Of course the Skrulls also have some interesting history that can be tied to some of the characters involved with The Eternals, so this could really serve as a tie in to many different parts of Marvel’s plan.
The Skrulls part in the film is said to be a minor one and, eventually, we know the original Avengers will team up to find a way to Avenge the Earth, but this is a clever bit of work by Marvel Studios and, as I said in the open, could serve as an in media res opening to the film to kick things off.
