A Black Widow film has been discussed for years and development was green lit in January following a brainstorming session that included Scarlett Johansson and Kevin Feige. Screenwriter Jac Schaeffer was brought on to develop the script for the film which we reported will find Black Widow operating after the fall of the USSR, which will place the film pre-Iron Man in MCU continuity. Last week, a short list of female directors that had met with Marvel Studios was revealed by THR and while no further names have been released, it is widely expected that the project will ultimately be helmed by a female, making it the first Marvel Studios film to be directed solely by a woman (Anna Fleck is co-directing Captain Marvel). While there’s still no official date for the film’s release, with Marvel Studios working this hard at finding a director, it seems very likely that Black Widow will fill the July 31, 2020 slot which is currently unoccupied.
