DC Universe, the upcoming digital streaming service that launches sometime in 2018, announced that in addition to Titans, Young Justice: Outsiders, and Harley Quinn, they are looking to add Swamp Thing to their roster of new Streaming shows. James Wan, Aquaman Director and hero of the horror movie genre will Executive produce Swamp Thing as a one-hour, live-action drama set for a 2019 launch.
Now, this is a script-to-series order, which means if the script is halfway decent, than our Green-Man goes straight from the swamp to series.
The log-line from the press release reads like the a summery of the original series, “When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.”
Created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson in 1971, the Swamp Thing was once a man named Dr. Alec Holland (Olsen) who murdered shortly before falling into some nasty mysterious chemicals floating around a swamp. He then became a human/plant hybrid, elemental creature, and fan favorite for years to come.
Since than, the Swamp Thing has appeared in four of his own comic book series, and a ton of crossovers, specials… oh, not to mention 2 fantastically retro movies (by Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing, 1982 & Return of the Swamp Thing, 1990), a Swamp Thing TV Series ran on USA for 3 seasons from 1991-1993, a cartoon in 1991 that I made my dad all the toys for and he is currently making appearances in DC movies and TV shows across the board like Batman and Harley Quinn, Justice League Dark, and Justice League Action (voiced by the Last Jedi, Mark Hamill… because he IS the last Jedi, dammit!), you can use him to beat the crap out of other DC heroes in the game Injustice 2, but most importantly this amazingly quotable peace ad from 1989…
Not much is known about the new show, other than the stellar team behind it, produced by Atomic Monster in association with Warner Bros. Television with Executive Producers: James Wan (who?), Mark Verheiden, (Comic Book writer, Netflix/Marvel Daredevil), Gary Dauberman, (It, It: Chapter Two). Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman will write and serve as showrunners. According to Wan’s Twitter, he’s “Been developing this “vegetarian hero” for awhile now 🙂 With a great team. Happy to finally share. Expect — mood, mystery, gothic romance, and swamp monsters!” and it’s “more horror than anything.” I’d say with these guys behind it, this show should be on it’s way to our ipads shortly.
