According to Deadline, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Donnie Yen has joined the cast of Disney’s long in development live-action remake of Mulan. Yen will play Commander Tung, a mentor and teacher to Mulan. For those familiar to the original animated classic Tung was not a character but a new character created specifically for this new incarnation.
Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu was cast in the lead role, with the studio still currently casting.The film will be directed by Niki Caro who directed Disney’s sports film McFarland USA. Caro has previously described the remake as a big, entertaining and moving martial arts epic.
Disney has found huge success with their live-action films, Alice In Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, Jungle Book, and Beauty And The Beast have grossed over a combined $4 billion at the worldwide box office. Disney is also in various stages of production and development on remakes of The Lion King, The Jungle Book 2, Cruella, Maleficent 2, Dumbo, James and the Giant Peach, Winnie the Pooh, Pinocchio, Genies, Night on Bald Mountain, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, and The Sword in the Stone.
Disney’s Mulan will hit theaters on March 27, 2020.
