It appears that the Marvel properties that have aired on Netflix will remain on the streaming service despite Disney developing their own service for release in 2019. We know the third season of Daredevil and second seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, all of which either begun or completed filming will be airing on Netflix in 2018. We also know that Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle is set to return for the second season of The Punisher and it seems that filming on that show may not be too far off as we’ve been able to get our hands on some character breakdowns for Season 2!
The breakdowns below are for two series regulars and while they don’t give much away or seem to be directly related to the types of characters we might think to be looking for in the second season, they do give us some ideas about what the second season could possibly be about. Marvel TV is looking to cast two female roles, ANNIE BEIR and KIM DAVIS. For the role of ANNIE, they are looking for an 18-year old female to play a 16-year old on the show. She’s been described to us a someone who is used to the streets and is both scrappy and aware of her environment. For the role of KIM, they are looking for a female in her mid-30s, open ethnicity, to become a series regular working as a therapist.
To be clear what follows is complete speculation on our part, but we think that these two characters may be main players in an adaptation of Garth Ennis’ 2005-06 story arc, “The Slavers.” We know that showrunner Steve Lightfoot is a fan of Ennis’ work (mentioning that he’d love to use one of Ennis’ creations, Barracuda, at some point) and it’s obvious that some of Ennis’ work influenced Season 1. While “The Slavers” is one of the most violent and disturbing stories, it’s also very poignant and relevant to the world in which we all live. The idea was touched on in Season 1 of Daredevil, but it certainly is a topic that might fit best in The Punisher, allowing Bernthal’s Castle to unleash a level of anger and violence appropriate to the scenario at hand.
As for how we came to our conclusion, the logic is as follows. ANNIE BEIR, the street-smart scrapper, could be an analog to Viorica, the young girl whose life Castle saved and whose story led him to discover the sex slave ring run by Vera Konstantin and Cristu Bulat. In that story, Castle enlisted the help of a social worker, Jen Cooke, who had worked with Viorica, to learn about the slavers and take them down. In this case, KIM DAVIS could be the Jen Cooke of the story. We know that typically Marvel TV has used character names that start with the same letters as their comic book analogs, but in the recent past, they seemed to have moved away from that tendency.
Additionally, it looks as though the new season may see some version of the Punisher Task Force come into play as it appears they MAY be casting for the role of Detective Martin Soap. We’re told that a casting search is underway for a male of any ethnicity in his early 30s to play an honest detective by the name of MELVIN SKELLING. While this may be a new character created for the show, it could just as easily be Soap, who was first introduced during the classic Garth Ennis story arc, “Welcome Back, Frank.” Soap was a staple of The Punisher for a couple dozen issues and appeared in Punisher: War Zone. Whoever this detective ends up being, he’s set to be a series regular with the option to return in future seasons.
If the second season of The Punisher does decide to take on a story as disturbing as “The Slavers“, it would be a bold move but also one that would certainly bring Castle back into the world of vengeance after he seemed to have settled the score with everyone involved in the death of his family. Of course in the world of Netflix, adapting this story arc wouldn’t be enough to fill out every minute of 13-episodes, so it would likely serve as just one of several intersecting stories that make up the season, leaving room for Barracuda to show up or for Ben Barnes’ Billy Russo to return as Jigsaw!
