With Captain Marvel set to resume principal photography in March and the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel aiming for a May start, it’s about time for Marvel Studios to start preparing for their 2020 film slate. While it has not been officially announced yet, it seems that James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will bat leadoff for the 2020 films, debuting on May 1, 2020.
After 10 years of making their own films, Marvel Studios is a well-oiled machine at this point and has a pretty well-established process. Part of that process is beginning pre-production on their films well in advance of principal photography and our source has indicated to us that in preparation for that process, the crew of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has already been at work in Fayette County, Georgia, home of Pinewood Atlanta Studios where they are tentatively scheduled to film in early 2019.
This marks a return to Fayette County for Gunn and crew as they filmed the majority of Vol. 2 at Pinewood Atlanta, a studio that could easily be confused as a property of Marvel Studios given the number of productions they’ve filmed there. Fans will no doubt be familiar with the area as it’s provided countless set photos over the past several years, though they shouldn’t expect too much of that with Vol. 3 as the film will mostly be shot on sets at Pinewood. That doesn’t mean we might not learn a thing or two about the production, however. If you recall, Sylvester Stallone’s involvement in Vol. 2 was confirmed when he was seen leaving an Atlanta hotel with his script in hand. Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that all of this is still tentative and may change; after all, Captain Marvel, which recently filmed a scene in Los Angeles, was originally scheduled to film in Atlanta before Marvel Studios was granted a generous tax break for keeping the film in California. But for now, it appears that all systems are a go for the final entry into Gunn’s Guardians trilogy to be shot in Atlanta!
