When The Last Jedi came out a month ago, no one could have expected the absolutely INSANE backlash the film received from fans.
Well, Rian felt the hate, to the extent that he thought he made a mistake by directing the film. A film he’d been waiting his whole life to direct.
In an interview with Slash/Film, Rian described what he was feeling the day the film was released and social media was burning with The Last Jedi hate.
“But at the time, I thought, ‘Oh my god, does everybody hate this? Did I totally mess up, was I wrong?’
“And I had a very dark hour of the soul…because I had no context for this.
“When even five percent of the people are saying, ‘You ruined Star Wars, I hope you die,’ that’s what you’re going to listen to.”
And since he’ll be directing the next complete trilogy, Johnson was asked if he would change his approach in light of the criticisms from fans.
The director replied: “No, I don’t think so. I don’t even know what that kind of approach would be.
“You have a way that you tell stories…you just do that.”
I honestly can’t wait for his trilogy. I loved The Last Jedi and truly appreciated the risks Johnson took in the film.
