Fans have been crying out for Black Widow to get her own solo film since her debut in 2010’s Iron Man 2. Unfortunately, this was back at a time where it was believed that a female led action film wouldn’t make a profit. Studios have been using cop out examples such as 2004’s Catwoman, and 2005’s Elektra. Both films were critical, financial failures that gave studios a convenient excuse as to why they would only feature male led action films. That mindset began to change with Angelina Jolie’s Salt, and Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy. Then in a move that the DCEU needed to get the upperhand on Marvel, they released Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins.
Kevin Feige and friends had to start feeling the pressure once Wonder Woman began filming since they immediately put Captain Marvel into development. This was a move that surprised and managed to upset fans due to their sole female avenger being put on the back burner. Well Natasha fans, the wait is over…..well not quite over, but there is a slow simmer.
Marvel has acquired scriptwriter Jac Schaeffer to pen a Black Widow solo script. They met with several screenwriters before settling on Schaeffer, and even met with Johansson herself to discuss plot ideas. Sources say this is still in early development so no telling if this is the origin story that everyone wants, but that Red Sparrow seems to be telling first.
Is it too little too late? Is this the first Phase 4 project that we’re going to see? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
