When The Force Awakens came out three years ago, the coolest looking character that I was the most excited about was Captain Phasma. I mean shes a FRICKEN stormtrooper made of CHROME! Then, during the film she started off great then she ended up in the StarBase Killer TRASH COMPACTOR! I was disappointed, to say the least. I wanted more Phasma Damnit!
Well, The Last Jedi has come and gone and yet again Phasma was disappointed. SPOILER ALERT, Phasma is only in the film twice and it seems she fell to her death into a giant fireball after fighting Finn once more.
I left with a bad taste in my mouth, is there not room for a strong bad ass villain female character in these films?
In truth, I don’t know. And that scares and upsets me because I really want to see this character explored. I’m actually very invested in the character now. And that’s genuine. That’s not just chat. It has opened up a chain of stories and events in my mind about who Phasma is.
After what happened to Phasma in both TFA and TLJ, I really can’t imagine JJ having any time to go back and give us some insight on the “chrome dome” herself. Rian Johnson discussed last year how difficult it was even fitting Phasma in TLJ:
I mean, as you can see, man, we had a really full movie already. We had a big, big movie with a lot of characters we were trying to serve, and the God’s honest truth is, every character had to find their natural place. And Phasma supports Finn’s storyline, obviously, and there just… until she shows up to fight him at the end, look through the story that we have, there’s just not a lot of space to go into a big Phasma storyline in it. So the truth is. It’s just a very big cast and you have to kind of pick your battles with it.
