Youtube channel FXitinPost has shared a trailer for Scene 38 Reimagined which is an updated version of the famous lightsaber duel from Star Wars: A New Hope between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader. The duel took place aboard the first Death Star and was the first lightsaber duel that was seen by fans.
By today’s standards, the original fight was slow-paced. Darth Vader and Obi-Wan simply appear facing each other in a hallway, unsheathe their respective lightsabers, and then whack them about a bit. They didn’t jump into the air or perform acrobatics (Kenobi’s Alec Guinness was in his early 60s during filming), and film editing in the 1970s tended to be more, um, leisurely paced than it is now. That said, it’s still one of the most thrilling sequences in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
For the most part both Vader and Kenobi keep both hands on their weapons and that is nice nod to the original fight scene.
FXitinPost promises that more will be coming soon and that the full scene will be released sometime in 2018. While what little we see of Vader and Kenobi’s duel in the teaser certainly pumps up the intensity, it’s nice that it doesn’t include too much prequel-era acrobatics and overly fancy swordplay.
