Will SPIDER-GWEN Be Re-named Ghost Spider?

More Spider-Gwen news. Reported by CBR, when Marvel announced its plans to launch a new animated franchise dubbed “Marvel Rising,” which will center around a film titled Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors starring Spider-Gwen, Squirrel Girl, Ms. Marvel, Quake, Inferno, America Chavez, Patriot, Captain Marvel and new Inhuman Exile, it shocked fans by announcing that Spider-Gwen will have a new code name in the series – Ghost-Spider!

When the alternate reality version of Gwen Stacy debuted in Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (a miniseries introducing alternate reality versions of Spider-Man) by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez, she was plainly named Spider-Woman on the cover…

Whatever Marvel’s original intent was, the fans dubbed the surprise hit character “Spider-Gwen” by fans and so Marvel used that name when they gave her her own comic book series.

In the comic itself, though, she continued to be referred to as Spider-Woman. However, as you might expect, that could cause some problems considering that Spider-Woman is not only the name of another Marvel character, Jessica Drew, but it is a character that they appear to have plans for on their own. Therefore, when it came time for the Marvel Rising project, Marvel Television decided to give Gwen a new name, Ghost-Spider.

The name had been used for a character on the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series (using Spider-Man’s Future Foundation costume).

With Dove Cameron playing Ghost-Spider in the animated film and Dove Cameron set for a stint on Agents of SHIELD (that had been rumored to be Spider-Gwen), it now appears likely that her name on Agents of SHIELD will probably be Ghost-Spider.

Recent issues of Spider-Gwen have also been setting up a SHIELD connection.

Besides the whole “other character by the name Spider-Woman” situation, it is also clear that obviously, the character can’t literally go by the name Spider-Gwen as her superhero name, since that would give away her secret identity right away. This, though, brings up the question of whether Marvel will be changing the name of Spider-Gwen’s comic book. If not the title of the comic, then perhaps her superhero name within the comic itself? Marvel tends to appreciate synchronicity if at all possible (hence Phil Coulson and a Nick Fury that looks like Samuel L. Jackson both being worked into the Marvel Universe back in 2011).

CBR checked in with Marvel to ask if there are any plans to change Spider-Gwen’s name to Ghost-Spider, and a representative told us that the name “Spider-Gwen” remains in place for the current comic books.

The name Spider-Gwen is so catchy that it seems hard to believe that Marvel would just completely abandon it, but there is a lot of power in having consistency throughout different media with names (hence DC Comics deciding to ultimately rename Captain Marvel Shazam, so that they didn’t have to worry about confusing people with Shazam in the title of the comic and/or movie and Captain Marvel within the comic/movie itself), so we would imagine it is likely that Spider-Gwen eventually gets the name Ghost-Spider in the comic books and then, depending on the success of Marvel Rising, perhaps gets a new series name eventually, as well.
