Square Enix is pumping out Tomb Raider games faster than you can do a back tuck while getting your pistols out of their holsters. Back in 2009 the developer of the Tomb Raider series, Crystal Dynamics, made the smart call to reboot the franchise from its stale 90s style gameplay and character model. While Lara Croft was the first female adventurer to hit the video game market she was still marketed towards the 13-25 male demographic and was a one dimensional character. 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot gave us a fish out of water Lara Croft who is thrown into peril when her ship crashes. The graphics were breathtaking, even with the Xbox 360 gaming engine. It helped that the game developers hired an actual actress (Grey’s Anatomy’s Camilla Luddington) instead of a model to be the face and voice of the young Lara Croft.
The reboot was a critical and financial hit. Developers were quick to release Rise of The Tomb Raider in 2015, and now two years later they have announced that we are about to see a third release!
That “major event” has been speculated to be the release of the live action film based on the video game reboot starring Alicia Vikander. We can assume that the new video will either be released at some point in March 2018 or April 2018. While I’m still only at a 60% completion rate in the 2013 game I cannot wait to see what this “defining adventure” may be. Hopefully, they didn’t rush through this too much and we end up with another Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.
No further details are being released at this time, and while it’s unlikely it will be exclusive to just one gaming platform there are no details regarding that either. You can see if Alicia Vikander can fill those boots once filled by Angelina Jolie on March 16th, 2018.
