Not much news regarding Joss Whedon’s Batgirl has come out since the release of Justice League. However, back in November sources close to the production denied rumors that Joss Whedon was no longer attached to the project. Those rumors began to circulate ever since Joss’ ex-wife published an expose based on their tumultuous marriage, and grew hotter when critics panned Justice League. However, as of today Joss is still working on the script for a film that has not even been green lit. Unfortunately, none of WB’s planned projects have production start dates; The Batman, Gotham City Sirens, Untitled Harley and Joker Film, Flashpoint, Green Lantern Corps. This is very disappointing as a DC fan.
However, with DC getting the upper hand on Marvel by putting their female characters front and center, Batgirl is going to be the role that every actress in their 20s would want to be considered for. We covered a story last summer when it was rumored that someone was asked to make concept art for actresses that have been shortlisted for the role. However, one actress that was not on that list was Hailee Steinfeld. While promoting the upcoming release of Pitch Perfect 3, Steinfeld had this to say to MTV Movies;
Steinfeld was asked if she’d like to be in a big superhero movie. “Yes, absolutely. Definitely on my bucket list,” she replied.
When asked which superhero she’d like to play, Steinfeld wasn’t sure. But when MTV said that she’d make a great Batgirl, Steinfeld admitted that’s who she was thinking of. “Not going to lie… that’s what I was thinking but I didn’t know what to say. I’d love that.”
Whether Steinfeld is seasoned enough to take on such a dark role is anyone’s guess, however it is hard to imagine her going toe to toe with someone like Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Do you think Steinfeld is a great contender for the role of Barbara Gordon? Let us know in the comments below!
