As well received as Ben Affleck’s take on The Dark Knight has been, the back and forth is becoming painful. For what seems like the past year Affleck has been playing coy with whether or not he will continue on in the DCEU, and even earlier than that he had been loosely committed to starring, directing, and writing the tentatively titled film; The Batman. The Academy Award winner ultimately decided to step down from directing the caped crusader’s solo adventure, and Matt Reeves took over. The War for the Planet of the Apes director cleaned house by tossing Affleck’s script, and allegedly tossing the actor himself.
While Affleck’s status as an actor in the DCEU is still unknown, he is still open to directing a Batman film. During an interview with the Daily Sabah he once again made this non-committal statement;
“For me, it’s interesting, and I always evaluate this stuff on the merit of the material,” Affleck replied. “I
want to direct a Batman movie, and I never got a script that I was happy with, so they are starting over and writing another script.
“And right now, I think a lot of different possibilities I think for the way the DC Universe could go, and I will just follow my interests in pursing that. And I know that I love working with this group of people, and it was a real joy for me to make this movie.”
To be fair there’s nothing to commit to unless Matt Reeves steps down, but even that film lacks a production start date, a finished script, or a lead actor committed to the title role. If twitter is any kind of indicator fans will be pleased with either director’s take. Both have a track record of creating critically acclaimed films, and you have to give Affleck credit for sticking to his guns by waiting for a quality script.
