This Friday sees the release of Star Wars Battlefront 2, which has already caused a huge controversy as it was learned that in order to play certain popular characters, players needed to unlock them.
The StarWarsBattleFront sub on Reddit exploded when users realized they couldn’t play as Darth Vader and had to pay to use the character or play for 40 hours. Electronic Art responded in the thread, which has seen the most down votes in Reddit history with over 436,000 in a 24-hour period. Here is the full Reddit comment from EA that got the down votes:
The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.
As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we’re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we’ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.
We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.
Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.
It’s further being said the Electronic Arts and developers behind the game are now getting death threats.
The good news is that now in response to Reddit and the fan complaints, EA has slashed the amount of credits needed to play the top characters – including Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker – making them more affordable.
John Wasilczyk, executive producer at DICE and the game developer of Star Wars Battlefront 2, announced in a blog post that now EA will reduce the amount of credits to unlock the top characters by 75 percent. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader now cost 15,000 credits instead of the initial 60,000 credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca and Leia Organa cost 10,000 credits, and Iden costs 5,000 credits.

We’ve done this with the closed alpha, through the beta last month, and our Play First Trial. And we continue to make adjustments based on your feedback as the game launches worldwide this week.
