When fans think of April O’Neil from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles they immediately imagine red head in a tight yellow jumpsuit. When the 2018 Nickelodeon cartoon releases the new iconic green ninjas, they will also be introducing a new April O’Neil. Many changes have been made to the Ninja Turtle lore, like Raphael being the leader instead of Leonardo for example but this time around April O’Neil will finally be depicted how she was originally intended.
In the original Mirage comic April O’Neil started off as a darker skinned woman who had dark curly hair.
Her character was based off a woman Kevin Eastman was dating at the time who was also named April. it has been said many times by the creators that originally April O’Neil was going to be African American. But further into the comics as they started doing color they slowly changed April O’ Neil into a Caucasian woman and slowly transitioned her into the April O’Neil from the 80’s show. Another character that was changed was Baxter Stockman who was originally an African American male, but once the cartoon came out they changed his race all together. Of course they made the changes and stayed true to Baxter’s character in the 2003 Animated show and casting Tyler Perry in the 2016 movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows.
Now with the new cartoon set to debut in 2018 it is awesome that April O’Neil will finally be portrayed as she was meant originally meant to be. Nickelodeon has cast Vampire Diaries star Kat Graham as our new April.
Over the years April O’Neil has gone through many changes from show to show. April has gone from being an assistant to a mad scientist to a high school student. But we will finally ditched the yellow jumpsuit and red hair this time around and see a new version of April that i now everyone will embrace. The show is set to debut in 2018 and is being co-produced by Samurai Jack character designer Andy Suriano. How excited are you for the new Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
