Filming is now underway for Sony’s Venom and recent reports have indicated that it may well adapt the 1993 Lethal Protector story that saw Venom move from villain to anti-hero. We still expect the film to be a dark, violent homage to the works of David Cronenberg and John Carpenter (and since Carnage is in it, it’s easy to believe that), but one that gives Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock a chance to do some good and stop Carnage.
Before filming got underway, we got our hands on a new set of character breakdowns for the film and one of them seems to line up nicely with the report mentioned above. Take a look at the breakdowns below:
[FEMALE PARAMEDIC]20’s, very attractive, physical type. MUST speak fluent Mandarin…CO-STAR
[ZIGGY]19, a male guitar player, he is a rocker or punk guy who never stops playing the guitar…CO-STAR
[LEWIS DONTAE]Male, serious, very physical soldier of fortune. MUST be a stunt performer…CO-STAR
[BABY NIGHT]50’s-60’s, former hippie, now homeless. MUST be able to sing…CO-STAR
[MRS. CHEN]50’s-60’s, funny, endearing Asian woman who owns the corner store…CO-STAR
If the Venom film is adapting the Lethal Protector arc, it would feature the Life Foundation, a group of survivalists who, at one point in the comics, forced the Venom symbiote to spawn 5 offspring. They then used those 5 offspring to empower a group of individuals from their security team which was made of off mercs, cops and former military personnel who they sent out to take on Venom.
The character breakdown for LEWIS DONTAE certainly seems to indicate that they are looking for more of that crew. Could it be possible that some of the roles are already filled? We know Jenny Slate, Riz Ahmed, and Reid Scott are in the film (along with Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Scott Haze). In the comic, the symbiote hosts were Donna Diego, Carl Mach, Leslie Gesneria, Trevor Cole and Ramon Hernandez, with only Diego moving on to play a larger role in the comics (for a rather potentially spoilery reason). Could Slate, Ahmed and Scott have already been cast as members of the Life Foundation? If so that would mean they would be joining Hardy in performance capture suits to portray 3 of the of Agony, Phage, Scream, Riot, and Lasher? Even more interesting, could the film version of the Life Foundation be responsible for the creation of Carnage, a role that some believe Scott Haze may have signed on for? We rarely get pure page-to-screen adaptations of comics, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see some of these things come to pass, nor would it be surprising if none did.
As for the rest of the breakdowns, we’d love to hear your guesses as this story makes its way around the web!
Venom will hit theaters October 5, 2018!
