Last month X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg revealed that production on the film had wrapped, leaving over a year until it’s November 11, 2018, release date. In that time, the studio will be hard at work in post-production trying to deliver what is hopefully a better, if not exactly comic book accurate, version of the epic Dark Phoenix arc from Chris Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men. Thanks to a friendly source, we have some details that we’ll be sharing with over the next couple of weeks of what Kinberg’s version of that tale is shaping up to be and we thought we’d start you off with a bang! While we’re not going to fully spoil it below, you should turn back now if you’re even the least bit spoiler sensitive.
We’ve seen the Dark Phoenix story before in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand and with it the unceremonious disintegration of James Marsden’s Cyclops along with the “death” of Charles Xavier. Though it didn’t really reflect much from the comics, it did show us an unhinged version of Jean Grey, one that had to be stopped at any cost. 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse teased viewers with a second chance to see the story done right when Sophie Turner’s Jean saved the day with a tremendous display of power, hinting at what may be yet to come.
Our source has told us that Kinberg is going to show us just how powerful Jean can be and is willing to do it at the expense of one of the actors who has been with the franchise since the beginning. At this point, only Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, James McAvoy’s Charles, Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and Nicholas Hoult’s Hank McCoy remain as mutants left standing from X-Men: First Class who is also returning for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. We are told that Kinberg is holding nothing back and that in a moment when Jean’s powers are on full display, they will become too much for the hero to handle. At that point, with her powers out of control, Jean will IMPALE one of the characters mentioned above, unequivocally killing that character.
Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll share some other info about the film with you that might help you narrow down exactly who is on the other end of that sharp stick, but we have made the decision not to at least make you have to do the deduction!
