The buzz around the Venom film starring Tom Hardy has been very strong as of late. We know the film starting shooting yesterday in Atlanta and while many wonder if we’ll see the wall-crawler, Spider-Man in the film there are those questioning how to bring the anti-hero to life. Well, Andy Serkis may have just provided us the answer. While out promoting his new film Breathe, Serkis confirmed that Tom Hardy will be donning a motion capture suit in the upcoming Venom film.
“The time has come that people understand that performance capture is a technology, not a genre of acting,” Serkis explains in our video above. Acting is acting, and the more actors – like Steve Zahn… and Karin Konoval who plays Maurice in ‘War For The Planet of the Apes’ – the more A-list actors that come on board, like Mark Rylance playing The BFG, or a lot of actors in the new Marvel films… Tom Hardy is playing a new character using performance capture. It all points up ‘what is the nature of acting?’ and there is no difference between acting wearing a costume and make up, or wearing a motion capture suit. That’s plain and simple, it just needs awarding bodies to understand that.”
Serkis doesn’t mention Venom directly but its easy enough to figure out what he’s talking about seeing as Hardy just starting shooting the Sony spin-off. We’ll see if Venom is going to be considerably larger than Hardy. Mo-cap technology has come a long way since the days of Spider-Man 3. This gets us excited if indeed the film will be Rated-R because they can make Venom and Carnage truly terrifying.
