The CW is no stranger to creating interconnected superhero universes. The network has been a trendsetter with their DC Comics’ lineup, known informally as the Arrowverse, featuring Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. In the past year, TV mogul Greg Berlanti has expanded his television filmography with his adaptation of the classic Archie comic, known as Riverdale. The hit show modernizes the familiar characters of Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica, in a series that is more Twin Peaks than Happy Days.
Following its successful first season, Riverdale is now preparing to spawn its own spin-off, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, featuring Sabrina Spellman. If that name rings a bell its because Melissa Joan Hart played the character in the popular series that first from 1997-2003 on both ABC and WB. However, the newest series is intended to be a total reimagining of the property, that will have a much darker and scarier tone.
The spin-off series is currently in the midst of pre-production, with Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, heading up the return of Sabrina. The upcoming spin-off is intended on being a coming of age tale, that will skew in a much more daring direction than the previous incarnation of the teenage witch. In fact, there’s a currently a casting search, which Omega Underground discovered a couple of weeks ago for the new series lead. It seems that the CW is keeping their options open and have put another round of calls out, this time emphasizing OPEN ETHNICITY, and we have some details on the description of what their exactly looking for in the new Sabrina via a recent casting call:
Female, Open Ethnicity, to play 16.
Sabrina is an half-human, half-witch,empowered young woman just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Sabrina’s intelligent, compassionate, and brave to the point of recklessness.
She is fiercely loyal to her family and friends; wickedly funny and in the middle of a star-crossed romance with her classmate Harvey Kinkle. She challenges witch-doctrine at every turn. She is all that stands between us an the Forces of Darkness that threaten our world.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is intended to be a stark departure from the former family-friendly series and will be leaning heavily into the supernatural elements that are inherent in the material. It will follow Sabrina’s attempt to come to grips with her genetic duality while having to battle evil threats to her and her family. It’s intended to be a total reimagining of the property, that’s heavily influenced by works of horror such as Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, according to THR.
The show was also described to us as a “companion” show to Riverdale. So, it seems inevitable that there will be continued fluidity between the two shows in the near future as Berlanti solidifies the new Archie-verse. There is surely a lot more to come in the near future, so stay tuned.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is aiming to premiere during the 2018-2019 television season on CW.
