Star Wars Force Friday II unleashed a treasure trove of new merchandise.
Fans have been pouring over every toy, figurine, LEGO set, book, virtual reality game and more for any clues to what will happen in Episode 8.
With feverish anticipation building for the much-rumoured return of Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker, it is a new costume leak that has given the biggest confirmation yet that Luke and Leia’s father is making an appearance.
Combined with all the other reports from Star Wars sets and Hayden Christensen’s own comments, this is looking more and more of a done deal.
A costume was advertised this week which started a flurry of fan speculation.
The fact that the Amazon page with the product was quickly taken down is a major indication that it showed sometHing it shouldn’t have. Nothing, of course, ever disappears online and Star Wars Youtube Channel Mike Zeroh has reported on this latest development.
He reported that the costume was titled: “Star Wars Episode 8 The Last Jedi Toddler Anakin Skywalker Costume.”
Two things are hugely important when taken alongside the image of the costume.
Firstly the costume is for a child but it is not from Episode 1 but Episode 8. This strongly implies that Anakin will appear wearing these robes in The Last Jedi.
Secondly the costume is not the beige robes that child Anakin wore on screen, nor is it his Jedi apprentice robes. The black and sinister robes resemble Anakin in his dark robes as he turns to the Dark Side in Episode 3.
The costume is for a child but, like children’s costumes of Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker, they are for young fans to play act as the adult characters.
So, what does this mean and how will it happen on screen?
The costume seems to confirm that the the Anakin who will appear will be the adult version, as played by Hayden CHristensen.
Zeroh said: “We have two possibilities here Either he will appear as Anakin Skywlaker in a Force flashback or he will be the force ghost that all the fans are hoping and waiting for in this film.”
However, if he is wearing these dark robes he will not be a Force ghost, since we have already seen that Anakin appears back in his classic Jedi robes as a ghost at the end of Episode 6.
Does this mean we will see powerful Forceback visions?
We know that Luke is a broken man and has lost all faith in what he used to believe. He now questions the teaching of Obi-Wan, Anakin and Yoda and is seeking answers but also peace of mind and certainty about what he should do next.
The best of all worlds will be if Hayden does appear on screen as Anakin’s Force ghost but also shares important flashbacks of his fall from grace and eventual return to the LIght with Luke or whoever he is talking to.
A new description of Hayden spotted at Pinewood studios only fans the flames. It is possible that he was there for voice work, but one report stated: “He was put on a physical regiment to get himself prepared for the role.”
This points convincingly to an actual physical appearance in Episode 8.
The fan site Star Wars Theory is also quoting a new source who describes a scene in The Last Jedi with Hayden as Anakin, appearing as a Force Ghost and sharing an important memory.
Hayden Christen himself dropped major hints at Star Wars Celebrations in Anaheim earlier this year when he said: “My relationship with the films is still very much… very present in my life. My life is still very Star Wars-centric.”
