In an official press release by StarWars.com, it was revealed today that J.J. Abrams will be back to write and direct Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Christ Terrio.
It was J.J. Abrams who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, tapping into the nostalgia of Star Wars fans everywhere with the seventh installment in the franchise. It seems fitting that he will be back to round out the end of this trilogy.
When asked about her thoughts on bringing back Abrams to the Star Wars Universe, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had this to say:
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy.”
Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.
