In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, David Koepp, the screenwriter for Indiana Jones 5 revealed that Shia’s character, Mutt Williams (definitely not as catchy a name as ‘Indiana Jones’), will not be returning for the 5th installment of the Franchise. Mutt Williams was introduced in the 4th film, 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
*Spoilers if you haven’t seen the film* Mutt turns out to be the son of Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) and Indiana Jones. It was theorized that they could be setting Shia up to take over the franchise, however upon poor critical reception (though the movie did well at the Box office, taking in over $750m on a $100m budget), if that had been the plan, it was quickly abandoned.
When asked about the status of the film Koepp said:
“I know we’ve got a script we’re mostly happy with. Work will be endless, of course, and ongoing, and Steven just finished shooting The Post …. If the stars align, hopefully it’ll be his next film.”
Without Shia’s character, we will most likely be introduced to a new young character to take on the brunt of the action. While we know from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the upcoming Blade Runner 2049, Ford can still hold his own, but he did just recently turn 75 and isn’t able to perform some of the more intense action sequences that the film may call for.
So, what are your thoughts? Did you like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or Shia Labeouf’s character Mutt Williams? Who do you want to see as the new talent in Indy 5? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
