Started in 2013, Beyond Fest is a genre film festival that takes place at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. Horror, sci-fi, action, comedy, if it’s a cult film—or a cult film in the making—chances are it’ll find its way into Beyond Fest’s programming at some point. The highest attended genre film festival, Beyond Fest has always had great lineups, but this year seems particularly stacked. If it didn’t already wear this crown also, this year the festival is making an aggressive play for the title of best genre festival in the world.
The lineup of films and guests is just insane: A 4K restoration of Suspiria with Dario Argento; a double feature of Predator and The Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger; Howard the Duck with Lea Thompson (I know, but I know people who will actually be interested in that); Edgar Wright and Walter Hill for a double feature of Baby Driver and The Driver; Jean-Claude Van Damme with his Amazon series Jean-Claude Van Johnson. Then there are west coast premieres of cult hits in the making like Mohawk and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
That’s just a fraction of the genre insanity the Beyond Fest has in store in its nearly two week run from September 29th through October 10th. Ichi the Killer, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, The Room, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there’s a ridiculous amount of stuff. Like, I need to win the lottery so I can go to every single one of the screenings I’ve mentioned and then some. I highly recommend checking out the schedule if you live in southern California, because I guarantee there’s at least one thing you’ll want to see. And be quick about it; tickets went on sale this afternoon, and I have no doubt that some of these screenings will sell out fast.
