BATMAN: THE MURDER MACHINE
“How may I help you” are famous words spoken by Alfred Pennyworth that become frightening in the Dark Knights tie-in, Batman: Murder Machine.
We all know the lengths Bruce Wayne went to in order to become the Batman. He took a solemn vow to stop crime and protect Gotham City. We’ve even felt his anger after each Robin he has lost, but what if he lost Alfred? The one man that truly knows Bruce. Alfred raised Bruce after his parents were shot and killed. He became Bruce’s father figure and there is no one more important to Bruce than Alfred.
Each Metal tie-in has been a what-if story in the Dark Multiverse; a multiverse built by the nightmares of Earth-0 and is never meant to survive. Readers saw in Red Death, that the Batmen of the Dark Multiverse are aware that their worlds are ending, so they have banded together to form the scariest group anti-heroes ever! The Murder Machine is another entry into the Dark Multiverse story.
So, what happens if Bruce Wayne loses Alfred? The story opens with the brutal death of Alfred at the hands of Batman’s greatest foes. During the wake, Bruce tells Vik about an A.I. based on Alfred’s memories he has been working on but needs the help of Cyborg to complete. Not knowing what it would ultimately become, he agrees.
Like most A.I. stories, the “Alfred Protocol” goes on a killing spree. Much like Ultron in the Avengers second film, the Alfred Protocol decides the only way to keep Bruce safe is to kill everyone that threatens him, which essentially means Bruce himself. The Alfred Protocol reconstructs Bruce, removing any weakness until he is ultimately a machine.
The Batman: The Murder Machine is a fun and dark addition to the Dark Knights Metal story. I can’t wait to see where all of these stories lead to.
