Comic Rewind: Spider-Gwen Vol. 1

What would happen if Gwen Stacy was bit by the mutated spider instead of Peter Parker?  Find out in Spider-Gwen Vol. 1.

In our Marvel universe [Earth 616] obviously Parker was bitten and turned into Spider-Man, but in this universe it is the opposite.  Another change is Spider-Man makes a tragic mistake and accidently kills Stacy, but in this universe Spider-Woman accidently kills Parker.

Parker idolized Spider-Woman and wanted to be a hero like her.  He decided to take Dr. Conner’s formula which made him into Killer Croc and use it to transform himself into a superhero.  However, he lost control and started rampaging at his high school.  This led to a fight with Spider-Woman and Killer Croc Parker.  As a result of the fight Spider-Woman killed Parker.

Stacy is haunted by her mistake and the loss of her best friend.  Spider-Woman is thought of as a menace in this universe too, but she is also wanted for the murder of Parker.  Her only three allies are her cop dad and Earth 616’s Spider Woman, Jessica Drew.  She gets her tech from Janet Van Dyne aka Wasp as Stacy doesn’t have the tech knowhow of Parker.

In high school Parker, Stacy and Harry Osborn were best friends, but after Parker’s death Osborn distanced himself from Stacy. Osburn just came back into Stacy’s life and we find out he witnessed Parker’s death and wants revenge.

Osborn joined the military and then S.H.I.E.L.D. to suck up all the knowledge of war and combat he could.  He then used this knowledge and his access to Oscorp to create a Green Goblin suit.  Osborn then uses the suit to wage war on Spider-Woman.

Spider-Gwen Vol. 1 was written by Jason Latour with art by Robbi Rodriguez, Chris Visions and Rico Renzi.  Marvel Comics published the volume in 2016.

This was a really interesting comic.  I like what-if comics and seeing how things change when little adjustments are made is always interesting to me.  What was really cool about this comic is a lot of characters had that slight changes.  Captain America is a black woman, Peggy Carter is in the Nick Fury position as head of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Frank Castle aka Punisher is a police detective.

A great deal of this volume is about Stacy’s guilt over the death of Parker.  I liked to see her facing the same issues and troubles of Parker Spider-Man.

The bulk of the big problems I saw was all the flashbacks and flashforwards in the volume.  Some of them are smooth and others not as much.  I’d say the worst example is when Osborn reveals he is Green Goblin and will find Spider-Woman.  He reveals this at a lake house and then they are fighting in the city.  However, I want to know what happened in between and how far apart are these two scenes?

The art and chose of colors I liked.  All the characters were done in a more cartoon like style.  However, my favorite part was all the pink they used.  I never see bright pink let alone pink in comics, but this volume used a ton and I loved it.

I was not really all that invested in the story.  It read like an overview of a story rather than the complete story.  Nothing really impactful happened in the story and since this is a totally separate universe I wish they really went for it and made big stuff happen.  I enjoyed the story, but I wish it offered more.
