Del Toro’s role has been referred to as DJ up until this point, and has been shrouded in secrecy in terms of storyline and allegiances.
However, one of several theories continually doing the rounds is that the character is actually Ezra – a fan favourite from the TV series Star Wars: Rebels.
Johnson has revealed that this is not the case.
Speaking to Good Morning America, he said: “Ezra from Rebels? He’s his own person. DJ’s his own person.”
Pushed on whether DJ is actually the character’s name, he squirmed: “Yeah. Well, that’s what we call him.”And on whether it “stands for something”, the film-maker said: “It does, yeah.”Another prominent alleged leak that has emerged has claimed that Del Toro is playing Gannis Ducain; someone who was referenced in The Force Awakens as having owned the Millennium Falcon at some point before Han Solo took it back.Others suggest the D could stand for “Darth”, or that he could be a “grey Jedi” who balances the dark and light sides of the force.
