Stan Lee’s Wife Joan Lee Passes Away At 93

Joan Lee Passes Away At 93

This Friday should be an exciting day for comic-books fans everywhere as Spider-Man: Homecoming finally hits theaters, but Thursday night fans across the world were given terrible news.

Joan Lee, the wife of comic-book legend Stan Lee, passed away Thursday in Los Angeles at age 93.

Earlier in the week, Joan was hospitalized after a stroke.

Joan and her husband had been married for 69 years.

In an interview with Hollywood Reporter in 2016, Stan Lee describes how he first met his wife:

“There was one girl I drew: one body and face and hair. It was my idea of what a girl should be. The perfect woman. And when I got out of the Army, a cousin of mine said, ‘Stan, there’s this really pretty girl named Betty. I think you’d like her. Why don’t you go over and ask her to lunch?’ I went up to this place. Betty didn’t answer the door, but Joan did. I took one look at her. She was the girl I had been drawing all my life. She said, ‘May I help you?’ I think I said ‘I love you.’ I proposed to her at lunch.”

Stan has often credited his wife as the inspiration behind the Fantastic Four, which led to his massive success with Marvel and his other creations over the years.

The entire story of how Lee fell in love and how Joan inspired him to create what would become the Marvel Universe can be watched in the documentary, Web of Stories: Stan Lee. Stan begins to talk about his wife at 11/42.

MARVEL has released a statement: “We lost a member of the Marvel family today and our thoughts and prayers go out to Stan and his daughter Joan in this difficult time.”

Marvel artist J. Scott Campbell released an illustration he did for the Lees’ along with his sentiments.

“Was so very sad to hear today of the passing of @therealstanlee ‘s lovely wife Joan. This was a piece commissioned and ultimately given as a gift to the Lees, reimagining his first meeting of Joan ala “Peter Parker meeting MJ”. Just last month my fiancé @tanyalehoux and myself were fortunate enough to spend an evening with Stan. He talked quite a bit with us about “Joanie”, how he would often meet her after his day of work at Marvel in the early evenings walking down 5th Ave in NY. Even now he was still vividly describing the sun dress she was wearing, the way the wind was tossing the fabric and her hair as she was walking down the busy sidewalk towards him. All these years later he was describing the moment so romantically you would’ve thought it only happening days ago. It was so lovely and inspiring to hear the how much the two of them remained in love all of these decades later. Our deepest condolences Stan.

Some may remember Joan as the voice of Madam Web from Spider-Man The Animated Series in the 90’s. Madam Web guided Spider-Man through the trials of his life, much like Joan backed Stan in real life.

I think Kevin Smith put it best in his Instagram post:

“They say behind every great man is a great woman. In this case, the great woman was always standing right beside him.”
