The Hollywood Reporter reports that Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams have officially joined the cast of Josh Boone‘s X-Men spin-off New Mutants. Taylor-Joy will portray Illyana Nikolievna Alexandria Rasputina, a.k.a. Magik, while Williams will breathe life into Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane. Taylor-Joy is best known for her performance in the super successful M. Night Shyamalan film, Split and of course, Williams is known as the feisty Arya Stark on HBO’s hit fantasy drama Game of Thrones.
Both names have been floating around for a while now, but negotiations did start until the film was officially greenlit earlier this year. Something else worth noting is that with James McAvoy will not reprise his role as Professor Charles Xavier, so it looks like they’ll be saving him for X-Men: Dark Pheonix. The report reveals that the rest of the team members will consist of Dani Moonstar, Sunspot, Warlock, and Cannonball which is something we confirmed back in January. The studio is dedicated to making a concentrated effort to find ethnically appropriate actors for the roles. THR’s Borys Kit also debunks the rumors of Nate Wolff playing Cannonball, which is something we also reported back in January. One actor we know that was up for the role was Charlie Gillespie (Degrassi: Next Class), but we don’t know if that’s still the case.
Production is expected to start in July, so we should be hearing more casting news pretty soon. The scripts written by Boone and Knate Gwaltney is already down and rumor has it it’s loosely based on the Demon Bear Saga, but details are being kept under tight secrecy.
