Counter-strike has been around since 1998 and is one of the oldest games sill being played by the gaming community. It’s one of the most viewed content on twitch, created one of the first E-sports leagues, and has a vibrant community with open source maps and mods. The skins you receive from loot boxes have basically created a major E-gaming blackmarket that still has a legal grey area and makes money in the thousands. One of the hallmarks of the game are the guns you choose to use to get you to that MLG pro life. Not every gun in the game is created equal, however. Some of the guns are a gift from Lord Gaben himself, others stick you in ELO hell in which depths of which you will never return. The community is often divided on which guns are the best to gain in the ranks. Is it the AUG? The AK-47? The Deagle? There’s so much argument about top guns, that I’ve decided to make a through and definitive list about the weapons. I sunk over 600 hours into CS:GO alone, and countless hours in 1.6, source and so on. From my 17 years of playing (don’t judge me, in my humble opinion, it’s the perfect FPS) I have some thoughts into these guns.
Without further hype and spec, here’s my definitive best/worst guns to use on CS/GO.
This is the newest gun to hit the CS:GO scene. With it being a new addition to the gun scheme in years, fans understandably lots their minds over it. For a glorious week, people were making 1-2 hit wonders camping long on Dust 2. This broken gun shortly was hot-fixed, the novelty wore off. After the fix, it became a niche weapon. It takes high skill to wield a shot delayed weapon, but can still wield some force if used right.
VERDICT: MLG if you put the effort into using it right
Super cool looking and some cool skins to match, this gun makes any scrub or MLG look like a bad ass. The dualies are a solid first round starter if you are looking to risk the buy to get ahead. They also stand up well to the Tec9 if you are CT siding. The other benefit of the dualies is the extra ammo, which is sorely needed if you find yourself on your own. The only drawback is the reload time. Find a place to wait it out before you find yourself becoming a bullet sponge.
VERDICT: MLG AF
The Desert Eagle is another medium / high skill weapon. It commands lots of power with only 7 bullets. If you can land a head shot there’s nothing that can stop an opponent from having a short match. However, anywhere else on the body and its basically “luck of the degale”. Many times I have rage quit over this particular gun, but it has its moments and comes with a satisfying bang.
VERDICT: Half MLG/ half suck.
The starting pistol for the T-side. It’s one of the worst weapons in the game. There’s nothing like laying down a bullet that only does about 14-16 hp per shot. It comes with a decent amount of bullets, and a semi auto option, but unless your camping out, its not all that useful. stick with a Tec9, or pull out your knife instead.
VERDICT: HELLA SUCK
An absolute essential early game T-side. Semi – automatic, lots of bullets, good dmg penetration, and really outdoes most of the pistols. Really well rounded. The only issue with this gun is that is can slow you down a bit. Also a decent gun if low on funds.
Low recoil, fast gun, short on bullets though. You will run out of ammo quickly.
VERDICT: SUCKS. Don’t be cheap, get the five – seven
Starter pistol for CT’s. Personally I love the silencer on this thing. It aims better and feels like and does more damage than the T-starter. It’s got a slow rate of fire, and a small magazine. I would choose it over both the P2000 and the glock.
VERDICT: STILL SUCKS (in comparison to your choices)
Good for exactly the first round, but not much else, while the magazine load is higher than the Usp-s, the damage is a bit like the Glock.
This gun conflicts me. On one hand its fully automatic and super cheap. On the other hand, you better kill someone quick and efficient as you have one reload. It does better damage than the starters, can get a one hit headshot with armor, but super inaccurate. If you kill someone, you get low money awarded at 100 per kill. This would be the type of gun that Lord Gaben himself would make to toy with us. Up close and personal, it’s a good weapon to use.
VERDICT: Even with it’s short comings, it’s still an MLG weapon.
Lots of bullets, super sexy in fire rate. Solid counter to the Tec9. It’s a shame the gun isn’t used as often as it should be as it gets passed up for the dualies or the deagle. It’s a sleeper gun and considered a semi – automatic. and the best part? Insta-kill head shots. good with med/close shooting.
VERDICT: MLG. Engage quickly with this one.
The nova is awesome if you know how to aim. This is not a gun for multi enemies. At the low, low price of 1200, this is one of the best guns to rush with. It hold 12 rounds, but takes a hot second to chamber through. If you have enemies trying to rush you, this weapon is perfect for stopping someone at a bottle neck. If you find yourself with a long range enemy, or even a mid range enemy, switch to your pistol.
VERDICT: MLG if you can aim well.
This cannon can wield some serious damage in close quarters. It’s a 1-2 shot winner. You can easily wipe a 1v4 disadvantage in the right circumstances. It’s a good rushing weapon. however, you will probably play point man, and you probably die. But you will take some dudes down with you, and you will be a hero…flowers and all.
At only five bullets, the mag 7 may seem like a suck weapon, but it will kill at medium range, something the other shotguns won’t do. The MAG-7 is the glass cannon of CS:GO. Super for 1v1 combat, not so much 1V4. It’s a super popular weapon based on its effectiveness. I would use it if i’m ahead, the XM1014 if I’m behind. It’s a tough choice between the Nova and the MAG at times. However, due to its high price point, there are better guns with higher capabilities for the price.
It looks cool, and it has a satisfying feel to the shot. At the price of the nova, It hits heavy and unpredictable. It’s a wider shot than the nova, so it will hit more people. It’s also a good ambush weapon (as is the nova). Really, the only difference between this and the nova is a bit of extra spread. I typically choose Nova over the sawed off.
VERDICT: SUCKS A LITTLE BIT
The MAC 10 is a super op level weapon. Its super cheap, lays down bullets quickly, and is a killer rush weapon. For a gun its size, it does surprisingly well mid range. at 1050 to buy, its a solid choice for early game. Be careful with your shot, the bullets go quick, and reload time isn’t the best, but at the price it’s offered, it’s the perfect weapon early – mid eco rounds.
VERDICT: MLG ESSENTIAL
The PP-BIZON, budget P-90, is another strange and interesting weapon. On one hand it has more bullets than any other gun sans full machine gun, but the hit is super weak. If you spray and pray right however, you can grab a few kills. If you have the cash, spring for the p90, if not, the gun does little more than scare the crap out of the other side for a small second. MAC 10 would be a better option.
The MP7 is one of the most forgettable SMG’s in the game, and for good reason. It’s in-between the MAC 10 and the P90 in terms of price with none of the benefit. While the range is decent as well as the bullet count the actual damage it inflicts is terrible. Again, if you have the money, stick with the P90 or the Mac 10.
This gun is super sexy in terms of damage. Its not exactly a spray and pray with only 25 bullets, but more of a burst fire weapon. You suffer no speed reduction, it’s cheap, effective, and the second best SMG in the game.
VERDICT: Pretty MLG, count your bullets.
The P90 is the noobs and the MLG’s first choices in the game. More than once, I’ve slayed entire teams with this boxy weapon. with 50 bullets per cartage and high damage penetration, it becomes the go to gun mid-game. Spray. Pray. Slay.
Not as bad as the MP7, but not by much. Really good accuracy, so you can spray and pray all you want with quick reload times. Still a mostly forgettable gun.
*UNPOPULAR OPINION* but I love this gun. I tend to call it the M4 light. It’s an awesome price for a rifle and can do some damage medium and close. The recoil makes it almost useless long range, in which I would pick the M4. It also doesn’t do a 1 hit head shot, but it’s rate of fire makes you not worry about it so much. This gun is criminally underused. I hope it sees more play in the future.
VERDICT: Lowkey MLG
I’m a bit torn on the FAMAS. It is a decent weapon for sure and well rounded. It’s easy to hit head shots with the low recoil, and the burst fire mode basically turns it into a shotgun if needed, but the price point makes me stop in my tracks. Why would I choose this if I can get a P90 for almost the same price? It will also depend on what your strategy is. I typically save for next round or go p90. Objectively, this gun can hold it’s own, but the bullet count holds it back hard.
VERDICT: ULTIMATELY…IT SUCKS…fight me
The AK-47 is one of the most popular guns in CS:GO, if not the most popular. It’s a decent price, 30 rounds for a clip, and can shoot at basically any distance. If you find yourself with a head-shot, there’s no contest. The drawbacks come with the recoil. THIS IS A BURST-FIRE WEAPON ONLY. If you flail about, your team will be making jokes at your expense. It will take some skill to use this weapon, but if you master it, you’ll will be rekking people left right and sideways.
VERDICT: MLG ESSENTIAL
On the CT side of things lies the AK-47 rival, the M4. Another burst fire weapon only, this gun is easier to use due to its extremely low recoil, and the price tag shows it (2700 vs 3100). I typically play the M4 over the AK any day of the week. The AK is superb, but I like having more control over my weapon. You do well with this weapon, you basically become ninja on the map.
VERDICT: Also MLG essential
This weapon is my number one choice always and forever. The 553 is a scoped assault rifle good for mid and long rage combat. I prefer this over the CT sided AUG for its lower recoil and better pricing. It’s less powerful than the AUG, but it overall gets the job done better.
The AUG is a expensive bit of weapon, coming in at 3300. I use it when I get frustrated about being too close to the enemy. It’s a unique weapon that shouldn’t be used in short range situations. As a player, you may ask “what’s the difference?” Other thank a high recoil and higher damage, not too much. Some may laugh at your gun choice, but top fragging usually drowns it out.
VERDICT: MLG, DON’T SPRAY!
SSG 08(or the scout)
I. HATE. THIS. WEAPON. It’s a super cheap alternative to the AWP at 1700, but it frustrates me that this takes about three shots to kill if you can’t head shot. If you are MLG, you will use this gun in early game. I don’t use it, but I acknowledge it’s power and skill.
VERDICT: Objectively MLG.
One of the most expensive guns in the game, Is the best gun in the game in terms of skill and damage. While you shoot one bullet at a time, it’s 95% of the time a one hit kill. It will take a bit of skill to shoot those jumping around, but make this gun your main, and they will yelling “HAXXX” at you before too long.
I’m going to talk about both of these guns the same way because they are virtually the same guns. They are the most controversial weapon types of the game. The Auto-sniper is commonly known as “the bitch move” of the game. Remember that AWP? These are basically the same thing, but as a automatic that doesn’t leave the scope. They come in at a whopping 5000, but I hate to say it, but it’s worth it. Trolling aside, if you find yourself in the middle of a tough match, these guns will put you over the top. It will also start an auto-war, lots of name calling, and turn the rounds toxic quickly.
VERDICT: MLG and TOTALLY SUCKS SIMULTANEOUSLY
With a recently dropped price to 2000, it’s not a bad pick. the full machineguns are good for one thing, and that’s laying supressive fire. Unless you have a team that loves to rush against you, there’s no reason to pick it. It’s inaccuracy almost make the glock a better choice.
VERDICT : SUCKS
the M249 is alot more accurate than its counterpart, and does alot more damage, but it is the most expensive gun in the game at 5750. Most people use this gun as a “Very last round gotta spend something” type of weapon. It’s a fun gun to play with, but shouldn’t be used in competitive.
VERDICT: SUCKS, but fun
ZEUS/ KNIFE: If you get gud with these, you are MLG.
That covers all of them. Do you have a favorite? We’d love to hear about it!
